The Great Flood of 2011

…That Never Happened.

The first week of May we had lots of rain.  Like 10 inches in 2 days.  The creek behind our house was roaring. We also had our closest call with the tornados. It was wild, to say the least.   On Monday morning, the power at Mason’s school happened to be out due to the storms so school was delayed until noon. This made me very happy…I’ll explain why later.  This did not make Mason happy though.  It was the first week of finals and Mason was anxious to get to school to get them over with!

At about 9 in the morning, our neighbor came over, in the rain, to tell us that we needed to prepare our house in case of a flood.  We knew the Mississippi was flooding, but we didn’t think it would affect us at all. Well, it wouldn’t  but the creek behind our house would.  He continued to tell us that our neighborhood has flooded before…up to his waist.  He said that he had to get his family out of the house with a boat.  He told us that it would be a good idea to get everything up off the floor or upstairs.

This is when I became very happy that Mason’s school was delayed.  I can’t imagine how much I would have freaked out if Mason would have been at school.

We spent the next hour or so haphazardly throwing things on our bed, after raising it on bricks, putting stuff on counters and upstairs.  Mason said I freaked out…and I guess I probably did…I am pregnant! I may or may not have cried.

Luckily the rain stopped that day and the creek went down. I was just left with a huge mess to put away!

We got tons of phone calls from family that week and were touched that so many people were concerned for us!

Here’s some pictures of the huge mess!

Wow! I can’t believe that it’s already been 5 years! We’ve accomplished a lot together and can’t wait to accomplish a lot more!

Here’s to more laughter, tears, school, love and joy!
